Ethiopian MPs have elected the country’s first female president – Sahle-Work Zewde.

Formerly a diplomat, she now becomes Africa’s only current female head of state. Her election to the ceremonial position comes shortly after new Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appointed women in half his cabinet posts.

President Sahle-Work has promised to make gender equality a reality in Ethiopia.

"I urge you all, to uphold our peace, in the name of a mother, who is the first to suffer from the absence of peace.''
