DRC – EU Renews Sanctions Against Ruling Party Candidate
The European Union (EU) has renewed sanctions against the ruling party’s presidential candidate and President Kabila’s chosen successor in the upcoming elections in DRC scheduled for 23 December, Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, along with several other senior officials. The sanctions include a travel ban and asset freeze.
Shadary became the subject of sanctions in 2017 as a result of his role as former Minister of the Interior during the violent repression of protestors opposing delays to holding elections that were originally scheduled for 2016. Several protestors were killed during the government crackdown.
As the country heads towards elections overdue by two years reports of election-related violence have been recorded by human rights groups and the opposition remains concerned by plans to use electronic voting machines for the polls.
