Madagascar’s President Names Cabinet and Promises Fair Elections

President Hery Rajaonarimampianina of Madagascar has named his new cabinet and reassured the public that he is committed to free and fair elections. This follows a court order to form a consensus government.

The new cabinet will include two of his predecessors: Andry Rajoelina and Marc Ravalomanana. The three men are known locally as the accountant, the DJ and the milkman – due to their previous jobs. Between the three of them they control three separate and divided political factions.

These appointments suggest a commitment to unity, the President stated that “The intent of this government is to organise an inclusive presidential election whose results have to be accepted by all,” Rajaonarimampianina said in a televised speech.

Rajaonarimampianina did not say when the election, scheduled for this year, would take place.
