Senegal – Country Awaits Official Declaration Of Results
President Macky Sall of Senegal is celebrating re-election with a claimed 57% of the votes. The figures were shared by Prime Minister Mahammed Dionne.
However, the country’s electoral body has warned politicians to wait for the official declaration of results, which is expected on Friday March 1. Two of Sall’s opponents, Idrissa Seck and Ousmane Sonko, have condemned the President’s move to claim re-election before the official declaration of results.
The election is the 11th presidential election since independence. If no one candidate wins an outright majority a run-off for the two front runners will be scheduled for March 24.
Ahead of the polls former President Abdoulaye Wade expressed concern regarding prospects of a free and fair election following the disqualification of two of the major opposition candidates.
