Guinea: President Condé Considers Third Term
President of Guinea Alpha Condé could be set to serve a third-term in office after his current term expires in 2020.
A constitutional referendum that would scrap the two-term limit for the office of the presidency may be on the cards, with reports circulating that preparations are already underway. While he has not explicitly confirmed that he will be seeking a third term, President Condé has so far refused to rule it out, preferring to state that he intends to be guided by the will of the people.
Opposition to the move has resulted in protests, with parties, civil societies and trade unions cooperating to oppose the move.
President Condé has himself formed part of the opposition to attempts by former leaders to extend their stay in office, having opposed a 2001 reference in which former leader Lansana Conté sought to removed term and age limits for the presidency.
